Computer Basics: Your First 30 Minutes

Learn the essential parts of a computer, connect common accessories, and confidently navigate the desktop.

Updated Aug 4, 2026

Step 1

Identify the main parts

Find the power button, display, keyboard, mouse or trackpad, and the USB and audio ports. Desktop computers usually have a separate system unit, while laptops combine these parts in one device.

Step 2

Turn on and sign in

Press the power button once and wait for the sign-in screen. Select your account, enter your password or PIN, and wait for the desktop to load before opening applications.

Step 3

Understand the desktop

The desktop is your main workspace. Use the Start menu or application launcher to open programs, the taskbar or dock to switch between them, and the notification area to check network, sound, and battery status.

Step 4

Shut down safely

Save your work, close open applications, then choose Shut down from the power menu. Avoid holding the physical power button unless the computer has completely stopped responding.
